The Maldives may be a fascinating country to travel independently, not least because it’s only been possible to try and do so for the past decade. Now, guesthouses are coming up on local islands on a weekly basis, offering budget travellers an inexpensive thanks to explore the country.

And, in some ways, travelling on a budget within the Maldives is way superior to staying in one among the posh resorts. When it involves the latter, each resort is constructed on its own island, isolating you from the remainder of the country so you never get an opportunity to experience local life. Staying on the local islands has given me an insight into life within the Maldives that only a few people have experienced thus far. But things are changing rapidly. The number of guesthouses on a number of the more popular islands are doubting every year as more and more travellers ensure in search of paradise on a budget. On one amongst the islands I visited, Dave and that I were the sole tourists – we had every beach to ourselves! I think this won’t be as commonplace five years from now.
